Entry from: Jolting around the central regions, Mongolia Entry Title: “Bumpy bumpy wilderness” Entry: “So, this is what Mongolia is all about, getting out into the countryside. We didn’t have enough time to see the Gobi and other things we wanted to, so instead we all picked a 10 day tour around central Mongolia. Sounds posh, but not really a ‘tour’. All the hostels in Mongolia do their own trips around the country, seeing as that’s the whole point of going. We crammed the six of us, along with our guide/chef/mum Hoogii, driver Davaa, and a mountain of food into a mini bus thing and set off into the wilderness. As I said before, most Mongolians still live as nomadic herders, which means that there aren’t really any towns outside of Ulaan Baator. People live in circular felt tents called gers that they can pack up and move around during the year, but even in the few towns, there is no running water, usually no electricity, and many people still live in gers. A nice, simple life, but I think it’d be to difficult and isolated for me! There are few paved roads, instead just tracks, or you just drive wherever you want. All this means that most of the country is a huge, unspoiled pristine wilderness, and also that it takes forever to get anywhere! The landscape is similar to that on Olkhon – scrub land …

JEREMIAH

Entry from: Terelj National Park, Mongolia Entry Title: “Ger Camp in Terelj National Park” Entry: “ULAAN BAATAR Yesterday morning, we left Ulaan Baatar at 9:30AM to start heading to a sanctuary park 60 miles northeast of the capital. The Mongolians I had met at Dave’s Pub the night before had painted an ideal imagery of Terelj National Park, so I was naturally excited to escape from the bustling capital for a while. We drove on the national highway to the park. The highway was essentially a one lane country road with potholes and bumps. On the outskirts of the capital city, we stopped at a Ger camp. Nemo, our native fearless tour guide, went inside the camp to purchase a drink unique to Mongolia and Central Asia: Airag, which was mare’s milk. The was milk obtained by a farming nomadic family from a horse, then fermented with bacteria and yeast to produce lactic acid and 18% alcohol. Nemo passed the milk bottle around for everyone to taste. After having horse meat last night, what better way to wash down the taste than with mare’s fermented milk, I thought. I hesitantly opened the bottle cap and took a sniff. Immediately, an acrid smell permeated through my nostrils. I slowly poured the airag into a cup and with one big gulp, I swallowed the slightly dense content. Airag tasted very much like sour …

FREEMAN

Entry from: Ulaan Baator, Mongolia Entry Title: “The Trans Mongolian Mate!” Entry: “I made it, I finally made it. I was in Mongolia and I was soon to embark upon a journey of a life time. My Trans Mongolian and Siberian dreams were finally about to come true. When I arrived in Ulaan Baatar I was collected and taken to my hotel. From memory, to get a home stay in Mongolia you have to be collected by some sort of official and have a hotel booking. Same as in Russia. I can’t remember why, I guess to look you over and see if you look strong enough to drink fermented milk with the men. The hotel I stayed at was great and the staff was so helpful and friendly. After dropping off my pack I headed out side. I walked for a few hours around a very broken and poor city. I felt like I was back in rural China again. From the sidewalks to the buses, everything seemed to be broken. As I walked people stopped and stared. Some even walked over to get a closer look. Traveling the places I had the past months meant I had been stared at quite often but this was very uncomfortable at first. In China people stared but smiled when you smiled and said hello. Here they stopped and just stared, some said hello but many didn’t. It actually made me want to go back to my room where I would feel comfortable. It’s strange walking …

BOBBY

It is made by preparing a brine made from fermented milk, vegetables, and meat; the brine can also include dried shrimp and other products. The brine fermentation can take as long as several months. Restaurant in Southern California This is the second time I have tried stinky tofu. Forgive my comments because I just wanted to give my honest opinions on explaining how the food smelled like. I’m not insulting anyone’s culture because I love trying new foods and I actually liked the stinky tofu in the end. I will remake this video because I don’t think it was described very well.

GENARO
