First of all, what is impotence in men? Male impotence, or erectile dysfunction, as it is commonly called, can be a total or partial disruption of an erection. A partial disruption of an erection can be something like the erection not being hard enough or not being able to sustain it.
There are many treatment options ranging from surgery to implants to medication to counseling. Almost 15 million men in the US alone have dealt with this or will deal with this at some point in their lives.
If a man has had this disorder all his life, it is known as primary impotence. If he acquires it later in life, this is known as secondary impotence. It can happen to any age at whatever time period it pleases. Not only that, but it can come from many different sources either biological or psychological with biological being more common.
The veins and nerves in the penis are the most common culprit when dealing with male impotence. Hormones being another big player, if you have too much or too little of a particular hormone you could experience male impotence. However, the sex drive is the one that suffers in the case of hormones, not actually a person’s ability to get an erection.
Male impotence can also be the result of substance abuse. Alcohol, smoking, and illegal drugs all play a role in making it so men cannot achieve an erection. Smoking in particular can even affect the sperm badly. Smoking can cause blockages in arteries and can cause restriction of blood flow to the penis.
Alcohol, as well, can damage the body. Specifically it attacks the nervous system. In the context of erection, it cuts off the signals between the brain and the penis, thus making it difficult to achieve erection. It may also cause significant problems with hormones causing the sex drive to be lowered a causing more problems with erection.
By avoiding certain substances and consulting with your doctor, you can better rid yourself of male impotence and make your body healthier into the bargain. You know it’s worth doing!
